This week on Lake Guntersville, the weather has been challenging, with heavy rainfall and high winds. Tuesday and Tuesday night saw over 4 inches of rain, followed by gusty winds on Wednesday. The current picked up as the lake began to recede, shifting from 594 to 595.30 by Thursday. By Saturday morning, the water level had dropped to 594.70, and today, it’s back to 594.00. The fluctuating water levels have affected the fishing, but despite the challenges, the fishing has remained really good. The key has been relocating fish daily as they adjust to the shifting water conditions.
We’ve been using a variety of baits, depending on where the fish are holding, and adapting to the water changes. On Friday, we saw a slight increase in water temperature, only to have it drop again today due to the changing weather. The fishing has been consistent overall, but the fish are definitely moving with the water.
I fished the BFL tournament on Saturday, and it didn’t go as planned. It started off rough when I broke the screws holding my graphs to the front of the boat, which meant I couldn’t run properly. I had to drive at only 30 miles per hour to get to my first spot. Thankfully, I was able to fix the issue with some tools from a buddy, but we lost over an hour of fishing time. The first area I fished didn’t produce, as the water was too muddy, but the second spot worked out better, and both my co-angler and I caught some fish. My co-angler had a great day and ended up cashing a check, finishing in 23rd place. While I can’t say for sure I would’ve caught the two key fish that helped him, they definitely would’ve gone well with my bag. I ended up with 18 pounds, which put me in 51st place. To cash a check, you needed 20 pounds.
Despite my personal setback, the lake continues to fish phenomenally well. The number of fish caught can vary depending on the weather, but overall, the bite has been solid. One of our days last week saw 50 fish in just six hours – a strong day, in my opinion.
Looking ahead, the weather will turn cold again, and while this may affect the fish a bit, what will have a bigger impact is the upcoming Angler’s Choice Championship Classic. This event draws top-tier anglers who consistently catch big numbers, meaning there will be immense pressure on the lake. Even though the water temperatures have remained fairly steady, they have dropped slightly. For the latest water temperatures, check out our Water Temperature Page.
