July 27th The Heat Is Real & So Is The Fishing

Wow it’s hot out there and the fishing is really good as well.

Lake Guntersville is really fishing well the best I’ve seen in awhile.

Discovered a new area and we caught them so fast we decided it would be a good opportunity to get a pic together like old times. And just yesterday took Tim fishing doing something totally different from the last month or so and we had a great day and we fished 9 hours in the heat and it just flew by, we caught fish all day and we was doing something that I just absolutely love doing.

I’ve been able to go from ledge fishing to grass fishing and catch them doing this. Some days the deep bite isn’t jiving and the grass is or vise versa.

When we go grass fishing it’s still a great worm bite, now the C-Mac is till producing but we’ve scaled down a little to a Big Thump and it’s like they haven’t seen one before and it comes through the grass real easy.. Keeping with a 3/8oz Picasso Tungsten. 8 foot seems to be the sweet spot .

Now when we go out deep we use Lowrance Structure Scan to locate them then I can determine if they are in a feeding mood or not. We’ve been starting with a 4×4 Football Jig in Green Pumpkin with a NetBait Baby Paca Craw and if that’s not it then it’s a big C-Mac 15 inch on 1/2 oz Tungsten.

This bass was pictured twice.. its in his right hand in the pic with him and his grandmother. I wanted to share this pic the bass is toad and he caught her when it was tuff but that was the bite that ignited the school we proceeded to catch them for 15 mins straight. ( and yes they all swam away like always)

Guntersville Is Looking Strong

Since my last report Lake Guntersville has not missed a lick. I would’ve thought with this intense heat that the bass would go full blown summer time mode on us.. WRONG its been the complete opposite getting plenty of bites and some are Hawgs but all in all its been a blast.

NetBait C-Mac is still holding strong.

4X4 Swim Jig with a Lil Spanky has been a great bait to cover water and find some active bass

The BullShad has had a few days where it just blistered them.

Been fishing all 3 major types of grass Hydrilla , Milfoil . & Eel Grass each one has its own pattern and its been depending on what the lake is doing that given day.. TVA that is ..

Think with all the grass we have this year the Frog Bite will be one to remember. Keep checking back for the frog update and I’ll give my predictions on when you need to book your frog trip this year. My Die Hard Froggers have already booked their dates … They know what can go down on any given day out here..

Lake Guntersville has been very good to my customers the past two weeks. Catching fish has been a lot of fun and we have caught some good ones mixed in.. These Green Guys sure do cure a lot of illness …..

Guntersville Bass Fishing Guides

Our trips have been producing many bites on a NetBait C-Mac in the grass. When the low light conditions appeared we would get our bites on 4×4 SwimJigs in the same grass.

A few trips was just to catch whatever bites and it was fun to say the least.

Im not a future teller so I’m not 100% sure what will happen with the water heating up this year but one thing is for certain we really don’t know what the weather will do.

The grass is starting to top out over the lake and the bass have started to make their way towards it and that makes the super twitch bite fun..

Water temps have been around 83 but have been getting as high as 88 so the bass seem to be moving around a little but they are still very active..

Looking forward to the Flipping bite .. Ive been doing it a little with some good results but the good times are still ahead..

Lake Guntersville June 28th

Just when we thought it was going to get hot n sticky …. Guntersville received a cool down and a lot of rain from Cindy the Tropical Storm… Water temps dropped to 78 degrees the water stained up and the bass shifted around on the ledges. So what does all this mean… Well from what I can tell is that the shad have gone a little shallower some bass have left the deep stuff the bass in the grass have moved to a different hang out.

Up till the heavy rain and current things was shaping up nicely and just like mother nature would have she threw a wrench in to the fishing… all this means is the Florida Strain Bass get finicky when things change and they tend not to act like we would like them to but they still can be caught.

Catching great numbers and good size in a 4-6 hour trip was more fun then I’m use to .. then the rain and current happen.. changed things up… and now that things are getting back to normal I am starting to find my spots are getting back to how they was before the rain.. Majority of our bass have been caught on a NetBait C-Mac worm with a Picasso 1/4 oz Tungsten Weight in 4-6 feet of water fishing grass to lay downs with a dock or two, some days we would swim the worm or drag it just had to let the bass tell you how they wanted it, we did have a small window of flipping where it was getting. the kicker bites every day we used a Tharp Jig by 4×4 BassJigs with a Paca Craw as trailer in 1/2 oz.

Then we would bounce out to some ledges and use a 4×4 LedgeHammer with T-Mac and pick up some quality bass . Some of the schools had a lot of fish in them and some just had 5 maybe 10 in them.

Fished the ABA and Thomas filled in for Steve finished 24th with 15.57 lbs.. Thought it was going to be on since the 1st bass was close to 5lbs then it was just smaller ones after that..

Had a day where both trips just wanted to catch fish and thats what we did.. we caught a bunch of fish mainly hybrids then we would move and try for a largemouth and picked a couple up doing that throughout the day.. it was fun.. The gu
ys from Las Vegas was very entertaining and Rodney n Heath talked trash and that was a good time…

Went out with a buddy and set up his graphs and showed him what different types of fish look like on his graphs and we did a little fishing too. As you can see he dropped the hammer on them..

Lake Guntersville June 12th 2017

Has the dog days of summer started? By 11 o’clock it was almost unbearable with no wind and mid 80’s we called it a day. We did manage 8 fish and lost a few more, the lack of current really made them lazy. We had to fish pretty slow but when you get it near one they popped it pretty good. ( 4×4 Bass Jigs Ledge Hammer with NetBait T-Mac)

Thomas and I fished the Sylvania Football Ram Classic out of Goosepond , we caught what we weighed in pretty early which wasn’t a whole lot of weight but it got us 3rd place. 15.30lbs

Last week was a good week with some great customers and one day was a tournament prep day which means no pics… We fished mainly deep last week and will continue to till they leave or just get to stubborn to catch. And will be checking the grass more as the heat sets in, now last year they left the grass and stayed on the ledges so who knows what they’ll do..

We did find a new school today that has not been out at all this year so maybe more are on the way.

June 6th 2017 Lake Guntersville / Kentucky Lake

Its been a busy 12 days for me, finished up the week before Memorial Day weekend with some good trips on the Big G then left for Kentucky Lake early Saturday morning for the Triton Owners Tournament.

Kentucky Lake is a massive body of water so Steve and I had some areas that we wanted to check to get us a starting point. The Bass seemed to be in transition with very few out on ledges in that area of the lake, on the 2nd day I found a school with some giants in it (pic below) and I hooked 5 in 10 cast just because it was fun…… after that I hardly fished the next 4 days just idled and scanned the ledges with our Lowrance HDS 12’s, between Steve and I we found 7 schools. So being boat 316 out of 400 we didn’t think we would get to fish anything that we found so we headed to the 1st waypoint in no hurry at all like 45 MPH for 20 miles and to our surprise when we got there not a single boat was within 150 yards after getting on the waypoint Steve’s 1st cast was a solid 4 lb and it was pretty much a beat down for an hour. So we rode 40 miles to the spot we wanted to start on for day 2 to see if it was found and to check it … well once we got on the waypoint I made a cast and had another 4+ pounder that didn’t help so we left and hunted more places and after awhile we decided it was best to weigh in early, the fish have been in the livewell for a long time and even though they looked fine we just wanted them to stay that way… we weighed in 3 for 14.65lbs had us tied for 27th..

Day two we was boat 84 and had a short day, we started where we wanted to and boy was it different no bites … they moved.. go figure a typical Tennessee River deal so we idled around and located a few and got them to bite we lost a dandy and caught 3 that went for 6lbs .. not what we had in mind.. We started running waypoints all the way back down the lake with little luck till we ended up at the spot where we caught them on day one and still had no real weight to speak of … We agreed on fishing new water and fishing a few spots that we found that we never casted on that had one or two fish when we scanned them, well we got to a waypoint that Steve had caught a good one earlier in the week and not a boat was around so we stopped and started casting and nothing was happening, and out of no where this pleasure boat runs over the ledge we are fishing and I threw in there after he passes and I get a bite we land it and cull then Steve catches one and Im culling and my lure is still in the water and he starts using my rod and asks for the net and I hadn’t even gotten his fish culled or his lure out of the net so Im netting this 5lber with his bait in the net … I’m still in the bottom of the boat culling and he hooks up again and we net it and continue culling .. did I mention when we pulled up to this spot we only had 20 mins to fish? well we made few more cast and we had to go to get checked in … if we only had more time we could’ve ran a few more areas like the one that saved our butts.

We weighed in 12.20lbs for a 2 day total of 26.85 that got us 28th place out of 400.

This tournament is by far the best ran tournament I’ve ever fished in with 400 boats the blast off was very smooth and the weigh in was as well.. You can tell they put a lot of effort into it and it showed. The other impressive thing was Earl Bentz on day two he remembered us and our day one weight and he told us we should get a good check and my response was “you think? ” and he was like yep, and I was like no I think we will come up short and he said you wanna bet $100 …. I declined the bet needless to say.

Now to Guntersville the bass had been making their way to the ledges pretty strong and when I got back and headed out I did find some out and they was pretty hard to catch so we had to move in to get our bites , so its like they are moving away from the fishing pressure or just moving up with the moon either way the ledges don’t have as many as they did 12 days ago.. The water temp was 79 and clear..

We caught our bass on 4×4 Football jigs with Paca Slims and 4×4 Ledge Hammers with T-Mac’s fishing 10 foot range.

Did see some schooling bass but they just didn’t stay up long but they are feeding up still and the bite should continue to stay good.

The Big Bass On The Big G Have Made The Move To The Ledges.

It took them a little to leave the grass this year , it might of been the one of the longest shad spawns I’ve ever seen or it just never got hot enough to move them out or it could of been the high current that TVA was moving through the Tennessee River. But hey its happening now.

They are not everywhere and some you can’t even see but they are there and a little harder to find , and when you do its worth all the effort in finding them.

We’ve been catching them on 4×4 Bass Jigs Ledge Hammers with NetBait Super T-Mac… 4×4 Football Jigs with NetBait Paca Slims . and a little topwater has been happening over grass on ledges.

Lake Guntersville Bass are asking Mother Nature why is she giving them cold fronts in May????? I know I’m not to thrilled with them.. The water temp starts out around 68 degrees and gets to 74.. Still having some strong winds, like Saturday … Ive seen Lake Erie with 10+ foot waves and now I can say I’ve seen 8 foot waves on Guntersville and I speared one for old time sake.. Not recommended at all..

So the fishing has once again taken a turn , the big ones don’t like the constant changing in the weather and of course we have a lovely full moon… So these little green fish are feeding up during the night and are not to active in the day time.. Oh and we’ve caught some pre spawn bass so we still have bedders .

Swimming a 4×4 Bass Jig Swim Jig in white with a little Spanky as a trailer all white in the mornings and then slowing up with a Net Bait Mad Paca in green pumpkin with a 3/8 oz Picasso tungsten weight. Fishing fairly shallow 6 feet and less.

Hatfield & Leary Take 3rd In ABA Lake Guntersville 4-29-17

Lake Guntersville May 1st 2017 the bass are still spawning and so are the shad.

The fishing on The Big G is exciting in short windows and if your in the right spot at the right time things get real.. And all the time in between you really need to not zone out because when you do is when you’ll miss your bite. Its been a 4×4 Bass Jig bite here all white swim jig with a white Little Spanky on the back fishing it around grass and rocks has been best and when they don’t want to chase we have been using a 6 inch Lizard dragging it around in the grass in that 6 foot range.

Steve and I fished the ABA Ram 100% Team Trail Saturday out of Goosepond.. We had one fish we needed to cull and if we could of done that things would of been interesting. Finished 3rd with 21.37 lbs and a 7.48 lb big fish.

Lake Guntersville April 23rd 2017

Guntersville Bass are still moving up to spawn. And the ones that have spawned have vanished, but I’m sure they will pop up soon.. But we had a week… Things here was happening fish was on the juice and plenty of them and they was big.. But you had to fish pretty slow to get your bites and as the week went on it got tough.. mainly because Bass Cat Boats held their Owners Tournament here and they had over 270 boats attend this year, and well the pressure really shut these largemouths down. Its nothing that this old lake can’t handle she will be back in full force in no time. So heres whats happening

Water Temp 72 ish

Water Clarity 3-4 feet in most areas

Bass are spawning in 4-5 feet and guarding their fry around docks , stumps and the post spawners are not playing at the moment (post spawn funk)

Ways to catch them:

Dragging a Net Bait Lizard or Mad Paca on 3/8 oz Tungsten Weight in 4-6 feet of water on hard bottom with grass was the best for us.

Some top water action on a couple of mornings did manage some nice fish doing this.

Lipless Crank in the grass has helped get a few decent fish in the boat daily.

Been keeping the boat 10 feet or less and having a great time.
