Hatfield & Leary Take 3rd In ABA Lake Guntersville 4-29-17

Lake Guntersville May 1st 2017 the bass are still spawning and so are the shad.

The fishing on The Big G is exciting in short windows and if your in the right spot at the right time things get real.. And all the time in between you really need to not zone out because when you do is when you’ll miss your bite. Its been a 4×4 Bass Jig bite here all white swim jig with a white Little Spanky on the back fishing it around grass and rocks has been best and when they don’t want to chase we have been using a 6 inch Lizard dragging it around in the grass in that 6 foot range.

Steve and I fished the ABA Ram 100% Team Trail Saturday out of Goosepond.. We had one fish we needed to cull and if we could of done that things would of been interesting. Finished 3rd with 21.37 lbs and a 7.48 lb big fish.

Lake Guntersville April 23rd 2017

Guntersville Bass are still moving up to spawn. And the ones that have spawned have vanished, but I’m sure they will pop up soon.. But we had a week… Things here was happening fish was on the juice and plenty of them and they was big.. But you had to fish pretty slow to get your bites and as the week went on it got tough.. mainly because Bass Cat Boats held their Owners Tournament here and they had over 270 boats attend this year, and well the pressure really shut these largemouths down. Its nothing that this old lake can’t handle she will be back in full force in no time. So heres whats happening

Water Temp 72 ish

Water Clarity 3-4 feet in most areas

Bass are spawning in 4-5 feet and guarding their fry around docks , stumps and the post spawners are not playing at the moment (post spawn funk)

Ways to catch them:

Dragging a Net Bait Lizard or Mad Paca on 3/8 oz Tungsten Weight in 4-6 feet of water on hard bottom with grass was the best for us.

Some top water action on a couple of mornings did manage some nice fish doing this.

Lipless Crank in the grass has helped get a few decent fish in the boat daily.

Been keeping the boat 10 feet or less and having a great time.

April 18th Big Bass Have Shown UP!

Lake Guntersville has had her share of unstable weather. With the Largemouth Bass spawning or attempting to spawn and throw in the lake rising and falling it sent the bigger bass to spawn in a little deeper water, which made them hard to find and catch. Not going to tell you we caught them every day, but we did have some really good days and some ok days its been a tough go around this spawn.

Things have been looking good here in the last 5 days numbers have jumped up and the size has too. The shad spawn has been happening for about 3 weeks now, with most of the bass spawning or moving up to spawn the shad spawn has been spotty but I am pretty sure it will be wide open real soon.

water temp is around 72 and the water is clearing up some from all the wind we’ve been having..

4×4 Swim Jigs in the morning and NetBait Lizards rest of the day in Watermelon had been doing the trick.

4-6 feet of water has been best.

Lake UpDate For The BIG BASS SPLASH MARCH 29TH

Lake Guntersville was doing great leading up to a harsh cold front and it took the water from 60 down to 50 degrees In most areas.. And now I am seeing 73 degrees in the back of creeks and 65 on the main river.

Are the bass bedding??

Yes some are and a lot are making their way to the spawning grounds. You might have notice your bites slowing down some and you might of had to change up your lures to keep getting bites.. Its all good the bass are making a big push as I type this out..

Spent today just looking around and getting an idea whats going on with having a free day to do so, looked shallow and seen a good many bass cruising and some on bed and the ones on bed are just buck bass. We didn’t get any bites out so that really makes me think they are on the move to the shallows.

Couple of baits that is working as of today is a NetBait B Bug in Green Pumpkin and a Big Thump worm in 6 feet or less. Use a 1/4 Picasso tungsten weight pegged.

March 7th 2017… Oh how I Love March On Guntersville

Lake Guntersville is about to show the world just how awesome she is.. The Bass are slowly filtering up from the depths. We have a FULL MOON next week and I’m not saying some won’t go on bed but I think this will get them staging in a big way. Water temps have been keeping around 55 to 60 just depends how cold its getting at night.

Fished the FLW BFL this past weekend and got me a 5th place finish with 18-10lbs and I’ll take it, I lost two good fish early Saturday that made me think I really blew it and when I had 10 mins before check in and I had 4 fish I was really feeling the pressure of the two that I lost, I caught a 15 incher with 10 mins and threw back in there and a decent one ate it and pulled off and next cast another one ate it and it was a 3lb with 3 mins left and I had to cull, and when I was done it was time to run across the creek and check in,,, Talk about some excitement now I was pumped about getting 5 fish limit and figured I had 14 lbs . I was really shocked when the scales said I had 18-10 and I was in 3rd at that moment, but when the scales closed I was in 5th..

Guntersville Bass Fishing Guides — Same Lemons and I both took 5th Place

Fished the Ram Open on Sunday and didn’t fair to well finished 27th but the cool news is my co for the day won and had a 6.83 lb kicker to seal the deal.

Lipless baits have been the ticket for me and my guide trips, you have to give them what they are wanting and people they are wanting them to the point of hooking themselves deep in their mouths. Reds and Shiny ones have been our go to. 1/2 & 3/4 oz . Heres the part that you have to figure out daily and it is will they bite shallow or deep today..and once you figure that out you can have a pretty good day..

Depths 2-6 foot or 8-12 foot have been best.

One of our keys this past week has been keeping in the shallow areas and working them over and with the winds we’ve been having the only way to do it is with Power Poles they allow us to make the cast to the hot spot and when they stop biting we just lift them and move on till the next bite.

If your wondering whens a good time to come ….. You might want to make them resverations fast things are about to happen here. This isn’t a sales pitch..

Lake Guntersville The Big G GVILLE she has a lot of names and as she should. A fishery like her is one of a kind with Florida Strain Bass and Fronts this place will keep you on your toes.

This past week was anything but boring, from catching really big bass to catching their offspring we had the best week for 2017. You can tell its spring time and what I mean is on day you’ll catch big momma’s all day and the very next day in the same area you catch big momma’s teenagers and most of them are white or yellowish white, these bass are steadily moving in to spawning areas.. Yes in February we seen temps as high as 80 degrees and water temps as high as 64 so its the natural thing for these bass to start to prep for the spawn… Heck I seen pollen blowing out of trees on Friday. So Madness Of March is upon us.

The Bass have been liking a lipless crank baits and to the point of digging the hooks out of the crushers. We have been keeping the boat 8 feet or less and some days you have to burn the trap and some days you need to crawl it on the bottom and rip it out of the grass. Our colors have been Red on the cloudy days and Chrome on the sunny days and 1/2 oz has been the best weight and 16lb Sunline Sniper Line on a Duckett Micro Magic 7’3 Med Heavy. This has been one of the best Lipless Years I’ve seen on this lake.

WATER TEMP: 55-60

WATER CLARITY : its pretty clear you can see the fish while your fighting them in.

We fought the wind on Saturday and managed 3rd place with 3 fish and we did lose one that was pretty big and if she was like the two we weighed then we might of won with 4 fish.. But thats fishing just blessed to be able to do it for a living.

The Last Two Weeks Have Been Good here on Lake Guntersville Big Bass have been swimming up form the deeper water and starting to pre spawn.

Back of the creeks are really starting to heat up with these warm temps this winter the bass are starting to make their way to the spawning grounds already and on this past Friday was a major wave of them, I had David Bryant with me to practice for the BFL and he had never really fished a LipLess Crankbait before so guess what…. he learned how on Friday then turned around and won the CO Angler side of the BFL with 3 fish that weighed 17-01 lbs guess you can say he isa natural.. And for me my 1st fish was a 6-13 lbs then it was a struggle to get a bite and I only managed to get 4 keeper bites and had 14 lbs which got me 23rd place.. `The bass have been pretty easy to figure out this past week it was to the point to where you could call your shot..

Best Baits & Colors

1/2 oz Lipless in Red on the cloudy days and Chrome n Blue on the sunny day

We fished flats that had deep water close by with eel grass and milfoil.

FLW Feb. 5th 2017 Duckett Open House

Looks like the FLW got dealt some of the ugliest weather of 2017 but that didn’t stop the them from figuring out Lake Guntersville. These guys are good and thats why they are some of the best in bass fishing along side the BASS Elites. In last weeks report I figured 19 a day would win and 17 a day for the top ten well as of 1:09pm to make the top 10 15,66 lbs made the top ten and by the on the water live weights Bryan Thrift is at 73lbs and that is 18.25lb avg … still have 2 hours of fishing so maybe this will all change..

We had our open house at Duckett Marine yesterday and it was a very full house, we had Kevin VanDam, Randy Howell, Shaw Grigsby, and Boyd Duckett signing autographs and giving seminars

and a lot of local businesses attended as well and the one I want to talk about is Clay Baldis for the Alabama Bass Trail. After a couple of mins of talking he asked when I was coming back to fish with them, well and here was my answer…. I would but I just have a hard time not saying anything when someone pull right up next to you and starts casting where you are already fishing…. Clay had a ver impressive answer for me.. “we revisited that rule about a year and half ago and its a 50 yard rule regardless trolling motor up or down”.. so you can imagine I was like wow thats awesome.

It takes a tournament trails like the Alabama Bass Trail and American Bass Anglers (have the same rule) to keep this sport we all love fun and growing. Now if we could just get these tour level events to follow in their foot steps, this week I watch FLW guy after FLW guy just cut other anglers off and some with really big names just try to bully their way in just to catch a fish.. Think about it like this if YOU ARE fishing a small area and another angler came in and casted and caught your line on his 1st cast how upset would that make you? Sure that angler found the same spot as you did but YOU was the 1st one there .. Do you own that spot. um no! ETIQUETTE (the customary code of polite behavior in society or among members of a particular profession or group.) Do To Others As You Would Want Done To You.

I didn’t fish this week … shocker right but I can assure you nothing has changed the bass are still doing the same as they have been I have a few days left in Feb and a few in March.

I went out and checked some spots Today Feb 7th 2017 and from what I can tell the pro’s didn’t find my fish….

I spent about two hours fishing and checked my main spot and they was still right were I left them.. Caught these two on the old lucky Red Lipless. I have days open this month to take you fishing and in march the days are filling up fast ( thats not a sales tactic ) trips are booking up. Jan 29th FLW Boys Are Here

After the high dingy water we get some cold weather and who do we blame??? FLW TOUR you just can not have a big tournament with out a cold front , but hey it is what it is.

So what has happen in this past week the fish have gotten in the best current breaks the lake has to offer …. BRIDGES but take a number its no secret here on Guntersville bridges get hot when the current starts to roll here, all the corners of them are magnets for bass and they are easy to catch, a 6-8 foot diving crank bait or one that dives deeper just depending on how they are set up. Now the grass fish are still in the grass and will continue to be there, but they seem to not eat as well with drastic change in the water and what I mean is the in 12 hours the lake came up 3 feet and in 3 days it came back down then it came up a foot and back down to where it was a week ago, add in some color to the water and you have todays conditions. So as I am writing this I took a min to look on Facebook and came across a midday update from David Dudley and at 12:08 he didnt have a bite.. It just goes to show that Guntersville can be tough at times but this place is still a amazing place its just sometimes not what you expect.

Here is what I think will win over 4 days

17lbs a day will make the top 10

19lbs a day will win.

not saying it can’t be more but I think with what I’ve seen here in the last two weeks . Thats a lot of boats and a lot of skilled anglers and they will all find areas that someone else has and there will be some sharing of the fishing going on, now with the warming trend happening this week I look for a lot of 15lb bags.

I had one trip this pass week and it was Saturday you know the really cold windy day.. We toughed it out and caught a good number of bass but just no really big ones but we had a blast.. Well when you look at the pic you might recognize the one guy he has become one of my repeat clients / fishing buddy.. and I must say he’s come along way from our 1st trip together where he had used a spinning rod..

Not real sure where to start..

I have several things for this week.. Lets start with numbers of bass being caught each time I go fishing, in the last 17 times out I’ve seen one slow day the other 16 times 20+ bass not all are big but the majority of them are. Whats this warm weather doing to them? Im not 100% sure but I do know they are are still moving around some, like grass line A will produce today and not tomorrow or it will and not the for the next 5 days.. Is it fishing pressure ? or are they in a rush to go make some beds? Grass line B will produce everyday with average size bass and one day it’ll give some big ones and the very next day it’ll be just average bass again.. but it produces every day, So catching fish isn’t an issue for us. Now the one slow day we had was a bit of a struggle with floating grass no current and no wind it made it pretty hard to get a clean cast let alone a bite, my clients kept at it and managed to catch a Gville STUD and that made it all worth it. Don’t let the negative rumors keep you from fishing this amazing place, it can be tough to fish and not everyone catches them like they want to or think they should, with that being said thats where the value of hiring one of the guides that this lake has to offer, a guides value is worth their weight in gold to a fisherman. So is Guntersville on a decline….. from what I see day in and day out NO has the playing field changed YES. Name another lake that takes a beating and still produces day in and day out…

The lures have been pretty basic for Guntersville this time of year, a lipless in the grass is hard to beat and a square bill on some rock is a combo that is getting stronger everyday with the shad around bridges and beyond the bass are making their way to the spawning grounds.
